How The Power Steering System Works

The power steering system is exactly what it sounds like. This system helps drivers steer their vehicle, making the car easier to turn and manipulate. Altogether, power steering simply makes driving easier for everyone. 

There are three different types of power steering systems: hydraulic, electro-hydraulic and electric power steering.

The hydraulic power steering system used pressurized fluids to decrease steering effort. The steering fluid is supplied by the steering pump. This type of steering system has consistently been the norm for many years, but electric systems are becoming very common as well. 

The electro-hydraulic system works fairly similarly to the hydraulic system. However, it uses an electric motor to drive the steering pump instead of a serpentine belt. For drivers, this system feels the same as a hydraulic steering system.

The electric system completely eliminates the use of pressurized fluids and hydraulics. Like the electro-hydraulic system, this system utilized a brushless motor. This motor is connected to the steering gear and steering columns to steer the wheels. Sensors detect which direction the steering wheel is being turned, assisting the steering gears in the right direction.
