7 Essential Tips Every Car Owner Should Know

7 Essential Tips Every Car Owner Should Know

Maintaining your car doesn't have to be overwhelming. By following these simple tips, you'll keep your vehicle running smoothly and avoid costly repairs down the road. Here are seven essential things every car owner needs to know:

1. Check and Maintain Car Fluids Regularly

Your car’s fluids are its lifeblood. Here’s a quick guide on the essential fluids you need to monitor and maintain:

  • Oil: Oil keeps your engine lubricated, preventing friction between moving parts. If your car doesn’t notify you when it’s time for an oil change, schedule it every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, depending on the vehicle and type of oil used.
  • Radiator Fluid / Engine Coolant: Crucial for regulating engine temperature, radiator fluid should be replaced every 50,000 miles, or every 24-36 months.
  • Transmission Fluid: Often overlooked but vital, transmission fluid should be changed every 50,000 miles to ensure smooth shifting.
  • Power Steering Fluid: Change this fluid every two years or after driving 30,000 miles to keep your power steering in optimal condition.
  • Brake Fluid: Essential for safety, brake fluid needs to be replaced every two years or 30,000 miles. Have your brakes and the fluid checked if you're unsure about the timing.
  • Air Conditioning Refrigerant: To avoid suffering in the heat, make sure your A/C system isn’t leaking, and the refrigerant levels are adequate. If you're experiencing issues, don’t hesitate to contact us.
  • Washer Fluid: While not critical to your car’s performance, maintaining proper washer fluid levels ensures you can always keep your windshield clean for optimal visibility.

2. Tire Tread & Alignment

Healthy tires are key to your vehicle’s performance and safety. Ensure your tire tread and alignment are in good condition to prevent uneven wear and unsafe driving conditions. Learn more about tire alignment here

3. Changing a Tire

Getting a flat tire is inconvenient, but knowing how to change it can save the day. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Fully inflated spare tire
  • Jack
  • Lug wrench

Make sure your spare tire is in good condition—there’s nothing worse than discovering your spare tire is flat after you’ve already started changing the tire. If you're unsure, consult your owner’s manual. Remember, safety is always the priority. If you don't feel comfortable changing the tire, call for help!

Pro Tip: Spare tires are designed for short distances. As a general rule, try to limit your driving to no more than 70 miles at speeds no greater than 50 mph. Check and confirm with your owner's manual.

4. Jumping a Dead Battery

Dealing with a dead battery is frustrating, but it’s manageable with the right tools. To jump-start your car, you can either use traditional jumper cables with the help of another car or use a jump box, which eliminates the need for a second vehicle. Refer to your owner’s manual for the proper procedures related to jump starting.

5. Monitoring Tire Pressure

Low tire pressure can increase the risk of a blowout, so it’s important to keep an eye on it. If your car has a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), it will alert you when pressure drops  below the recommended level. For cars without TPMS, use a tire pressure gauge to regularly check the pressure.

6. Replacing Wiper Blades

Wiper blades are crucial for maintaining visibility in bad weather. You should replace them every six months to ensure they are functioning effectively. Also, maintaining a clean windshield will ensure your wiper blades last as long as possible.

What an incredible season and a moment of pride for the entire Buford community. This championship represents a true dedication to hard work, discipline, and teamwork, and it is a testament to a program that continues to set the standard both on and off the field. At Team Ryan Automotive, we are incredibly proud to be a sponsor of this outstanding program, not only for what these athletes accomplish under the Friday night lights, but for the leadership and character they demonstrate beyond the game. The Buford Wolves consistently show that success is about more than wins and trophies. It is about integrity, accountability, and lifting others up along the way. Earlier this year at a Buford Academy pep rally, the football team took time to personally connect with every child in the room, making each student feel seen and valued. Moments like that show what this program truly stands for. Character. Community. And doing the right thing even when no one is watching. Our son Aidan shared how much it meant to him that he “got to slap hands with the real football team players,” a small moment that left a big impression. Experiences like that inspire younger students and remind all of us how powerful positive role models can be. That spirit of leadership and heart is something our family and our entire team at Team Ryan Automotive align with wholeheartedly. We believe in showing up for our community, supporting one another, and leading by example, values we see reflected so clearly in this program. Well earned, Wolves. Buford is proud of you, and we are honored to stand behind such an incredible team. 💚🏈
