Vehicle Maintenance Checklist: Keep Your Car Running Smoothly
Use this checklist to keep track of routine vehicle care and prepare for your next service visit. The right schedule depends on your vehicle, mileage, and driving conditions, so start with the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual.

Routine Maintenance Checks
Engine Oil and Filter
For vehicles with a gasoline or diesel engine, follow the manufacturer's oil specification and service interval. Ask your service advisor which oil and filter your vehicle needs. Battery electric vehicles do not need engine oil changes.
Tire Pressure, Tread, and Rotation
Check tire pressure monthly when the tires are cold. Use the pressure listed on the vehicle's tire placard or in the owner's manual. Inspect the tread and look for damage or uneven wear. Follow the manufacturer's guidance for tire rotation, since some tire setups cannot be rotated.

Brakes
Have the brakes inspected as part of routine maintenance and whenever you notice a change in braking, unusual noise, vibration, or a warning light. Your technician can check the pads, rotors, and brake fluid and explain what needs attention.
Battery, Fluids, and Visibility
Battery Condition
Have the battery and charging system checked if the engine starts slowly, a battery warning appears, or you have needed a jump-start. Battery replacement should be based on its condition and test results rather than age alone.

Fluids
Check the fluids your vehicle uses, following the instructions in the owner's manual. These may include engine oil, coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Use the specified fluid and service procedure. Ask your technician about leaks, low levels, or fluid changes.
Lights, Wipers, and Filters
Check exterior lights and replace wiper blades when they no longer clear the windshield well. Review the service schedule for engine and cabin air filters. Include these items in your next maintenance visit if you are unsure how to check them.

Before Hot Weather and Road Trips
Review the cooling system, air conditioning, tires, and any service that will become due during your trip. Tell your service advisor about leaks, weak cooling, or an unusual temperature reading before a long drive.

Check battery condition, tire tread and pressure, lights, wipers, and defroster operation. Have the coolant checked against the vehicle's requirements. Choose tires suited to the conditions where you will drive.
