Did You Know the National Anthem Was Inspired 38 Years After Independence Day?

A blog post from the Team Ryan Automotive family

This year's Fourth of July means a little more than usual. In 1776, fifty-six delegates put their names on a document that changed the course of history, and this July marks 250 years since that moment. A milestone like that only comes around once, so in the weeks leading up to the holiday, we wanted to make sure The Ryan boys understood just how big a deal it is.

So we made a trip to the Gwinnett County Public Library and checked out a book about Francis Scott Key, the man behind the words to our national anthem.

It turned out to be the perfect way to bring history to life for two young boys. Key's story isn't just about a song, it's about loyalty and courage. In September 1814, during the War of 1812, Key sailed out to a British warship to negotiate the release of his friend, Dr. William Beanes, who was being held captive. The British agreed to let Beanes go, but not before the coming battle. That meant Key and his friend were stuck on that ship overnight, watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry from the water, with no way of knowing which flag would still be flying by morning.

When the smoke cleared and Key saw the American flag still standing over the fort, he was moved to write the poem that would eventually become "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Watching our boys, Aidan and Liam, piece that story together, a friend who wouldn't give up on another friend, a flag that wouldn't come down, was a good reminder of why we celebrate this holiday in the first place. It's not just fireworks and cookouts (though we're looking forward to both). It's remembering the people who showed up, took risks, and held on to something bigger than themselves, 250 years ago and 212 years ago alike.

From our family to yours, we hope you have a Fourth of July filled with good food, good company, and maybe a good story or two of your own. And if you're hitting the road for the holiday, swing by any of our three locations beforehand: Buford, Cumming, or Sugar Hill / Suwanee, and let us make sure your car is ready for the trip. Happy 250th, America. 🎆
