How To Prevent a Rodent From Living In Your Car

Let’s face it: some animals are best loved from afar. Rodents would be among that category of animals, and as the weather starts to cool down, those little guys are constantly looking for a warm place to bundle up in. Unfortunately for us, that warm place may turn out to be our vehicles, and suddenly, these animals that we love from afar become not so… far.

Not only do mice, rats, and squirrels (oh my!) carry diseases that are transferable to you and your pets, they can also cause some hefty damage to your car, costing you money in repairs. These little critters are known to burrow in places that are often out of sight, nibbling on wires or foam insulation, and that is never ideal. So, let’s go over a few signs that could tell us when one of these afar animals has ventured a little too close.

  • Look for animal droppings in and around your vehicle (Think of the time in The Office when Dwight found bat droppings but a little less chaotic.)

  • Anything that looks like it has been nibbled on by teeth that are not quite human (i.e. wire, foam insulation, hoses, etc.)

  • Nesting materials like small twigs, paper, leaves, etc. (This indicates a small animal attempting to turn your car into their home–which is kind of cute in concept, but definitely something we should try to avoid.)

  • Be aware of any unpleasant smells in your car.

  • If a wire has been chewed to any extent, this may cause your car to short, so be on the lookout for any unpredictable electrical shorts.

If you're positive your car is rodent-free, let’s talk about some way to ensure it stays that way. Be sure to remove all food and drinks from your car each time you leave it. We know it’s easy for food to get trapped in small nooks and crannies (especially if you have a little one riding in the back), but keep in mind, food and even sugary drinks can invite little critters into your car. Vacuuming your car regularly will ensure its cleanliness and make it so there’s less of a chance for a rodent to sniff out your car.

If you park your car in the garage, be sure you have all dog food, bird seed, and even plant food/fertilizer properly sealed. These items can attract rodents, and not only does that make them a little too close to your house for comfort, they might find their way into your car as well. Also, keep in mind, plant fertilizer can be toxic for those little critters, so while we want to love them from afar, we also want to make sure we’re not accidentally harming them. Plus, this could also be dangerous if your pets ingest, so it’s best to make sure it’s out of reach and sealed.

Be sure to also seal all possible entries as the weather starts to get steadily chillier. Rodents will be looking for warm places to make a home out of, so it’s important to make sure the smallest of entry is sealed.

Let’s say that you have done all of these things, and you still somehow find a rodent in your garage or in your car. That’s possible. Number one thing to remember, do not come in contact with these animals, and try to keep your pets away from that area as well. These animals carry diseases that are harmful to you and your beloved furry kids. After that, you can get rid of them by setting up humane traps and cleaning that area thoroughly. If all else fails, you can always bring in the professionals.

There are also ways to repel rodents with natural repellents you may have in your very own house.

  • Ammonia : Fill small amounts of ammonia in plastic water bottle lids and place it out of reach of children and pets around your garage.

  • Peppermint Oil : Rodents are known for not exactly loving the smell of peppermint oil, so try soaking some cotton balls and placing them in and around your car.

  • Cheesecloth Sachets : Use dry cayenne, mint, and whole cloves and place them in corners of your car and garage.

Keep these items in a constant rotation, making sure to replenish when low. Keep in mind, these smells won’t last forever, so you may want to do weekly refills.

How Essential Is a Summer Emergency Kit?
By Dan Ryan May 9, 2025
Summer heat affects every part of your car, but your tires are especially vulnerable. The hot pavement, rising internal pressure, and long drives can all contribute to tire failure. At Team Ryan Automotive, we want to make sure your tires stay safe and road-ready all season. Here is how summer heat impacts your tires and what you can do to protect them. 1. Increased Air Pressure As temperatures rise, so does the air pressure inside your tires. For every 10-degree increase in temperature, tire pressure can rise by one to two pounds per square inch (PSI). Overinflation can cause tires to wear unevenly and increase the risk of a blowout. Check your tire pressure regularly and adjust it according to your vehicle’s recommended levels. 2. Faster Tread Wear Heat softens rubber, making it wear down more quickly. This is especially true if you are driving at high speeds on hot asphalt. Inspect your tires weekly during the summer for signs of excessive or uneven tread wear. If you notice balding or sidewall damage, it is time for a replacement. 3. Risk of Blowouts Blowouts are more common in summer because the combination of high speed, high pressure, and worn tires creates the perfect storm. To reduce your risk, avoid overloading your vehicle, maintain proper tire pressure, and replace old or worn tires as soon as needed. 4. Importance of Tire Rotation Rotating your tires helps them wear evenly, improving traction and extending their lifespan. Team Ryan Automotive recommends rotating your tires every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. This simple step can save you money and help keep your vehicle safe. 5. Alignment and Balancing Improper wheel alignment or unbalanced tires can cause uneven wear and strain on your suspension. If your vehicle pulls to one side or your steering wheel vibrates at high speeds, schedule a wheel alignment and tire balancing service. This can enhance tire performance and improve ride comfort. Visit Team Ryan Automotive for Tire Safety Tire safety is essential for your comfort, performance, and protection. If you are not sure about the condition of your tires, let our experts take a look. Summer road trips are a classic American tradition. Whether you are headed to the beach, the mountains, or your favorite theme park, the journey should be just as enjoyable as the destination. To help you avoid unexpected delays and make the most of your trip, here are five key vehicle preparation tips from Team Ryan Automotive. 1. Start with an Oil Change Fresh oil helps your engine stay cool, reduces friction, and supports fuel efficiency. If your oil is dirty or your last change was more than 3,000 miles ago, schedule an oil change before your trip. Remember, all TRA oil changes come with our complimentary Standard Vehicle Inspection. 2. Inspect Tires for Wear and Pressure Proper tire maintenance is essential for road safety. Check the tread depth to ensure there is enough grip, especially if you expect rain. Look for cracks, bulges, or signs of dry rot that could lead to blowouts. Finally, make sure all four tires are inflated to the correct pressure. Do not forget to check the spare tire too. 3. Test Your Battery and Charging System No one wants to deal with a dead battery in the middle of a road trip. Summer heat can weaken your battery and stress your alternator. Visit Team Ryan Automotive for a battery test and charging system inspection. If your battery is nearing the end of its life, we will recommend a replacement to keep you powered up. 4. Check Brakes and Brake Fluid Reliable brakes are vital for a safe trip. Listen for squeaking or grinding when braking and watch for a spongy pedal feel. These could be signs that your brake pads or fluid need attention. Let us perform a full brake inspection to make sure your vehicle is ready for any driving condition. 5. Prepare Your Emergency Kit Every road trip should include an emergency kit. Stock it with jumper cables, a flashlight, basic tools, bottled water, a first-aid kit, and non-perishable snacks. Having these items on hand can help you handle unexpected delays or mechanical issues more comfortably. Bonus Tip: Schedule a Pre-Trip Inspection Before hitting the road, bring your vehicle to Team Ryan Automotive for a pre-trip inspection . Our certified technicians will check your fluids, belts, hoses, tires, and more. We will catch small issues before they become trip-ending problems. Enjoy Peace of Mind on the Road A little preparation goes a long way when it comes to summer travel. Our team is here to help you enjoy your road trip with fewer surprises and more smiles.
