Reconditioning a quality used engine to replace an overheated one

In some cases, engine replacement is a viable alternative to acquiring a new vehicle. It can be done for a fraction of the cost, plus you avoid taxes, license fees, and insurance expenses that are incurred in vehicle replacement.

Rebuilding an engine is a big job, but the ASE certified mechanics at Team Ryan Automotive can handle this sort of project easily. Travis (pictured below) has prepared this used engine to replace the old engine in a customers car. Using a hoist to carefully maneuver the engine takes finesse.  You will find the next generation of mechanical skills and customer service at our shop.

Replacing an engine can save money and extend vehicle life. Here are four factors to consider:

  • Any vehicle that is otherwise in sound overall mechanical condition and is planned to be in service for several more years is a good candidate for engine replacement.
  • Engine replacement offers savings in taxes, license fees, and insurance costs
  • Replacements can be done at a set interval or at the time of engine failure.
  • Remanufactured engines should last as long as the original engine, effectively doubling the service life of the vehicle.

Vehicle replacement cost is among the biggest expenses of vehicle ownership. However, a viable alternative to buying a new vehicle, in some cases, is engine replacement, which can save thousands of dollars per vehicle.

The term "rebuilt engine" refers to any engine that is removed from the original vehicle, repaired, and replaced in that vehicle or any other vehicle. The term "remanufactured engine" refers to a used engine, or "core," which has been completely overhauled to "like-new" condition, including the replacement of all parts such as valves and pistons, and the removal and reconditioning of all parts. In terms of function, it is the equivalent of a new engine.

Here at Team Ryan Automotive, we try to take the hassle out of the repair process for our customers. We will help you understand the pros and cons of using a reconditioned engine. We have a no pressure approach that truly serves our customers first. We believe that a strong reputation is better than overselling a single customer.

Ever wonder what it takes to rebuild an engine

Why My Brakes Squeal

I recently received a message from a client about “Why my brakes squeal“. Not knowing the brake pads, I would have to say that they are at their end of use. There is a tiny piece of metal that will touch on your rotor alerting the driver that the pads are ready to be replaced.

Have you ever been cruising toward a column of cars waiting at a stoplight and when you apply your brakes are then rewarded with a sound that, like fingernails on a chalkboard? This can raise goosebumps on your neck – and maybe the blood pressure of the driver in front of you. Sound familiar?

Squealing or squeaking brakes can be annoying, embarrassing and even worrisome. There are many different things that can cause your brakes to squeal. Some causes are not important and won't cause any safety problems at all while others are indicative of major problems that need to be taken care of right away.

Keep in mind that you might need to take your vehicle out for a test drive to find out when exactly the brake noises occur. Are you encountering squealing brakes when driving, when braking or only in cold weather?

Like everything else automotive, an annoying noise can be one of the first signs that something is wrong, or it might mean nothing is amiss. It's up to you to quickly figure out which. Keep in mind that in most cases, a persistent noise, even after the brakes have warmed up, indicates that a repair is in order.

Wondering Why My Brakes Squeal?

There are three types of brake pads on the market:

We remove your vehicle's tires to be able to do a complete brake inspection. Providing peace of mind for our customers!

  • Organic Brake Pads: Organic brake pads are cheaply made and not meant to last very long. They are a softer composition brake pad. When you see a lower price on brake pads in a store, these are organic pads and are their loss leader.  Team Ryan Automotive does not carry, recommend or sell these types of brake pads.
  • Semi-Metallic Brake Pads:  Semi-metallic brake pads last longer than organic but typically create that dark brake dust which is evident on your rims. The front tires are usually more heavily coated than the rear, as the front brake pads typically provide the majority of stopping power (roughly 70%). These pads will make more noise than organic brake pads and the driver will hear squealing and grinding. While they provide much more stopping power than organic pads, they are still not as superior as ceramic brake pads. Based on the year of the vehicle being serviced at Team Ryan Automotive, we prefer to use ceramic pads… and here’s why:
  • Ceramic Brake Pads: Will usually leave only a very light color dust when used, versus the dark dust of semi-metallic and will last often twice as long with almost no brake squeal complaints. This reduces the cost of ownership and maintenance while ensuring great stopping power.

If you are hearing a grinding noise or loud squeal when you apply your brakes, it may be time to bring your vehicle in Team Ryan Automotive. Give us a call at 678.765.RYAN (7926)

Ford F150 Evaporator and Heater Core Replacement

To best solve this truck's AC concerns, the evaporator core needed to be replaced. In many vehicles, like this one, the evaporator and heater cores are located inside the passenger compartment buried deep behind the instrument panel.  Removing a dash to replace the necessary components, then reassembling the dash and all it's attaching pieces takes skill, patience and finesse.  To read more about our ASE certified mechanics, click here. Check out the pictures below for a series showing the repair in process.

A heater core in a vehicle transfers heat from the engine to the cabin, but the A/C evaporator works in a reverse manner. It transfers warm air out of the vehicle and then cools it down sending it back through the cabin. There are similarities in the two components and each needs a series of heating and cooling elements to work properly.

Team Ryan Automotive: Environmentally Conscious Auto Care

See this article on North Gwinnett Voice here or continue reading below:

In a saturated auto maintenance and repair industry, Team Ryan Automotive Service and Repair of Buford stands out from their competitors.  The Ryan's opened Team Ryan three years ago with a goal to provide exemplary service to their customers while having as small of an environmental footprint as possible.  Team Ryan Automotive has earned the “Best of Gwinnett” award all three years they have been in business.

Dan Ryan is a graduate from Gwinnett Technical College where he received Associate’s Degrees in welding and automotive repair.  Dan gives back to the college by donating materials for others to learn with. He also serves on the college’s Automotive Advisory Board where he helps guide/advise the school on staying current within the automotive industry.

Technicians at Team Ryan Automotive must possess certification by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence or ASE.  ASE is a nonprofit organization formed in 1972 to improve the quality of automotive repairs by testing and certifying automotive professionals.  Since Team Ryan has such a high percentage of ASE certified techs, they have earned the ASE Blue Seal of Excellence Recognition. There’s not many Blue Seal shops around with the next closest 20 miles away in Snellville.  Techs at Team Ryan Automotive are constantly receiving new training to stay on top of the industry and maintain their ASE certification.

Dan and Shara feel it’s their responsibility to give back to the local community.  They are active members of the Kiwanis Club of North Gwinnett where they have sponsored the Father - Daughter Dance as well as served on the scholarship hearing committee.  Team Ryan Automotive reached out to the local residents asking for bicycle donations at Christmas and were able to donate several bikes to area kids in need. Shara even made a quilt that was donated to the North Gwinnett Co-op where the quilt was given to a gentleman that needed the warm bedding.  They also are big supporters of Buford High School Athletics sponsoring several teams each year.

Having as small of an environmental footprint as possible has been at the forefront of their operations from day one.  They started before they even opened their doors by installing an industrial acrylic floor system in the shop which means oil and other environmentally harmful fluids cannot seep into the concrete and thus the soil.  The fluids sit on top of the floor to be cleaned up and disposed of properly meeting the Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful’s standards. High performance T5 fluorescent lighting that consumes less energy yet is brighter than the standard industry lighting was installed at Team Ryan Automotive.

Every drop of oil that has been collected at Team Ryan Automotive since they opened their doors in 2015 has been repurposed to heat their shop using a waste oil heater.  All the old batteries, tires, and antifreeze collected from their customer’s vehicles are all recycled properly. Their office uses only recycled ink cartridges in the printers.  Outside of their shop sits a recycle bin that is twice the size of the trash dumpster where anything and everything that can be recycled is tossed in. They practice the three R’s every day; Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

Their environmentally conscious operation has earned them the Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful’s first “Community Crusaders” award of 2018.

In honor of Earth Day, Team Ryan Automotive has joined forces with the Elachee Nature Science Center in Gainesville as a sponsor of the center’s Trillium Trek Trail Run and Walk.  The Trillium Trek Trail Run and Walk will take place on April 21st, Earth Day 2018. Team Ryan will be handing out literature on how they are environmentally friendly as well. The literature even has an Earth Day, environmentally friendly spin.  The card includes a Bloomin Earth Seed Pack. One only needs to soak the pack overnight, tear it up into pieces, plant the pieces in dirt, and water regularly to see beautiful flowers sprout up.

Team Ryan Automotive will continuously look to make their operations as environmentally friendly as possible.  They plan on doing even more on top of their already extensive community service in 2018. And one can count on Team Ryan to receive periodic training to keep current on their skill set to make sure that each Team Ryan Automotive customer is 100% satisfied.  They even back their work with a 2 yr./24,000 mile warranty on all parts and labor that they handle for your vehicle.

Team Ryan Automotive is located within the city limits of Buford at 2959 S. Waterworks Road.  For more information or to schedule an appointment, please contact them at (678) 765-7926 or online at

The North Gwinnett Kiwanis Club has a long history of giving back to our community. Throughout the recent years, we have provided to area school kids in support of their community projects, leadership programs, and scholarships for local high school students. In fact, over the past six years, we have awarded over $75,000 in scholarships to high school students. This year, thanks to the tremendous community response to our annual fundraising events such as the Father/Daughter Dance in the Winter, Golf Tournament in the Fall, and our Vidalia Onion Sale in the Spring, our annual amount will be between $16,000 and $20,000 in scholarship awards. We are proud to partner with the four High School Key Clubs that we sponsor at Mill Creek, Buford, North Gwinnett and Lanier. All of these Kiwanis organizations sell Vidalia onions and receive a share of the profits in support of their respective community service projects and we are thrilled to support these clubs, their faculty advisers, and their student leaders!
